Martin Knights has 40 years of broad industry experience specialising in urban tunneling and underground projects. With experience in over 20 countries, Martin brings a unique global perspective to his projects.
His recent work involves providing technical peer reviews for Rio De Janeiro Metro Line 4 and tunneling aspects of the Thames Water London Tideway Tunnels Project; in addition to acting as an expert panel member for tunnels, shafts and stations for London’s Crossrail project. Prior to this, Martin was the Project Director on the underground works to support the Large Hadron Collider project at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.
In 2010, he was awarded the BTS James Clark Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the national and international tunneling industry. In 2013, Martin was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and is now a Senior Fellow of Technology with CH2M HILL.
Martin will talk about the pressure on modern cities with high land values to expand underground as well as outwards and upwards. He will explore the new underground worlds that engineers are devising and creating.
