Westborough Academy Low Carbon Masterplan

 

This ground breaking project explored the use of low carbon engineering techniques combined with the re-use of existing Victorian building stock to provide a low cost, low energy, flexible building. This project was part funded by DECC to act as a prototype project and was monitored to see how this approach could bring benefits across the education sector.

 

OR Consulting acted as building services designers and acoustic consultant and worked to formulate the project’s environmental design strategy, which included measures such as:

 

  • The improvement of the building’s passive performance, by internally lining solid walls and ceilings with thermal insulation, installing secondary glazing and improving building air tightness.
  • The installation of energy efficient light fittings and absence detection lighting controls.
  • The integration of a biomass boiler, to offset the school’s heating and domestic hot water loads.
  • The integration of photo-voltaic panels to generate electricity on-site.
  • The adoption of heat recovery ventilation techniques.
  • The detailing of acoustic measures to satisfy the requirements of BB93.
  • The sub-metering, monitoring and targeting of energy consumption.

 

The Phase 2 and 3 works have built on the success of Phase 1 to facilitate further reductions in carbon emissions. The works have resulted in a 74% reduction in CO2 emissions relating to heating and hot water loads and a 43% reduction in CO2 emissions relating to electrical loads.

 

The project was featured in the RIBA Public Realm Directory and won the 2015 CIBSE Building Performance Award for the Best Project under £5m.

OR Consulting were appointed as environmental engineers for the low carbon development of the brand new college of fashion and design for Condé Nast.

 

The new college is on the site of the previous St Martin’s School of Art and the building required re-modelling and façade replacement to create a new state of the art college of fashion and design.

 

This low carbon building project sought to optimise the performance of the building fabric whilst maintaining the ability to naturally ventilate the spaces in a challenging external acoustic environment. The environmental strategy utilises air source heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation, energy efficient lighting and lighting controls to reduce the carbon emissions of the existing building by over 50%.

 

OR Consulting have acoustically designed the refurbished building in accordance with Building Bulletin 93, providing a quiet environment for learning in the noisy heart of London. The project won a 2014 AJ Retrofit Award and was shortlisted for the 2013 FX International Interior Design Awards.
