King George V Building St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Smithfield /
About & Contact
St Bartholomew’s was founded in 1123 and is the oldest functioning hospital on the same site, in the world. It was comprehensively redeveloped in the first half of the 18th Century with a range of new buildings by James Gibbs – around a courtyard – The Square.
In 2002 the NHS Trust awarded Skanska joint venture the PFI contract for the complete redevelopment of the Barts and Royal London Hospitals. Sinclair Johnston and Partners were engaged by Skanska to provide structural engineering advice on the retained estate. This work is ongoing with the current redevelopment of the 1906 RSQ building.
Extensive major works were undertaken to The King George V Building to create a modern hospital visit. Works included a new reinforced concrete core, the complete demolition and re-working of the rear elevation and major roof works to accommodate a Building Maintenance Unit.
At Sinclair Johnston and Partners, we specialise in complex projects requiring innovative and unique Civil and Structural Engineering solutions each devised to support and serve the Architectural design.
